Year of New Beer: The Reverend, Avery Brewing (CO)

Written By: Dion on 07/21/2014

Languishing in my beer cellar for nearly five years, I finally decided to crack this one tonight. The nose is sweet with caramel malt, fruit peels, and hints of wet leather. On the tongue is a candied apple sweetness, earthy nuttiness, and a warming alcohol. I've probably let this one slide beyond its peak. Even so, the depth just isn't there for the style. Nowhere near the pinnacle against which it is judged--Trappistes Rochefort 10, Westvleteren 12, and St. Bernardus Abt 12--but still a solid American offering.
