Year of New Beer: Absinthe Barrel Aged Klutzy Buffoon Saison, Spiteful Brewing (Chicago)

With barrel aging all the rage in the craft beer industry, I guess it was just a matter of time before someone decided to marry a beer with absinthe. The nose has many of the typical saison features--lemon zest, mineral water, and some funky yeast. The difference comes with the incredible fennel note that dominates. On the tongue is much of the same, with the lemon providing a tartness that smooths out considerably thanks to the black licorice sweetness coming from the absinthe. This is one crazy beer. Many thanks to Zac at Country Boy for sharing this one with me.
