Year of New Beer: Calabaza Boreal, Anchorage Brewing (AK)

Brewed in conjunction with their friends at Jolly Pumpkin Artisan Ales in Michigan, this saison brings the funk in a big way. The nose is loaded with tart fruits--peach, tangerine, grapefruit--while also featuring traces of grape skin, peppercorn, and a yeasty punch. On the tongue, the grapefruit is pithy and acidic, providing a bitterness that easily brushes aside the faint white grape sweetness that lingers below the peppery spice. The Brettanomyces adds an awesome layer of earthy funk to this crisp, biting beer. Very enjoyable.
