Year of New Beer: Memphis Ella Black Saison, Rooster Brew (Paris, KY)

Coolshipped/koelschipped and fermented in a bourbon barrel, this one offers up a nose of roasted coffee, lightly charred malt, and a slightly funky oak. On the tongue the flavors are more diverse, as a mildly herbal hop bite blends seamlessly with traces of bitter cocoa powder, musty hay, light vanilla and oak. The faintest of bourbon hints with warmth. Very good, and probably one of my favorite "non-sour" beers from Ralph Quillin and Andrew Horne.
