Year of New Beer: Müther Bräin, Blue Stallion Brewing (Lexington)

My first experience with an old ale came many, many years ago as I sampled Curmudgeon from Founders Brewing. Even then, with a much more limited palate, I was amazed by the layers of flavors that I tasted. Finding one that has that richness is tough. Now we have one made locally. One of four bottles in the just released "Boss Battle" series, this one will be tough to top. The nose is loaded with caramel, raisins, oak, bourbon, and faint earthy hops. On the tongue, a brown sugar sweetness takes center stage, supported nicely by the wonderful Pappy Van Winkle bourbon heat. Dark fruits and a subtle chocolate linger beneath a slightly charred wood and caramel. This is rich, complex, and delicious. I say we all march on 3rd Street and demand that Kore and Xavier make this beer again. Less than 300 bottles? C'mon guys!! Well done.
