Year of New Beer: Sixfold X Flanders Red, West 6th Brewing (Lexington)

Let's be honest...getting to try some of these local bottles prior to their public release is the proverbial double-edged sword. On one hand, I'm humbled and grateful that I'm given the opportunity, and equally mystified why anyone cares what I have to say. On the other hand, what if it just isn't any good? I want nothing more than to see the local guys do well. So if a bottle release rolls around and I get a sneak peek, I'm gonna take the chance. Doesn't always happen, but I'm certainly happy when it does. My concerns about "the other hand" are short-lived, because this is quite simply outstanding. The nose packs an initial punch of tart cherry, framed against a backdrop of dusty oak, leather, and lemon zest. With warmth, the woody notes open up, joined by damp hay and sweet pipe tobacco. The tongue is greeted with a sharp, sour bite that slowly releases hints of unripened fruits atop a faint sugar sweetness. Cherry, lemon, and Granny Smith apples provide the pucker, building through the bottle but stopping just shy of becoming overly acidic. The year spent in barrels is evident but not obtrusive as the oak seems to ebb and flow, combining with just the right amount of funk to add layers to the beer. Full disclosure...my overall experience with this style of beer is limited. But after 20+ years of drinking beers that some may consider weird or unusual, I feel like I've got a pretty good grasp on knowing when something goes to a different level. This is one of those times. Thursday at 5pm in the West 6th Taproom. It will be limited, and I don't think you'll be disappointed.
