Year of New Beer: New Year Old Ale, Monnik Beer Co. (Louisville)

A one-year, Brett-infused whiskey barrel slumber produces a complex nose of tart cherry, unripened blackberry, and light caramel. Hints of smoke and chocolate, along with traces of vanilla as the glass warms. On the tongue, the cherry is sour, but not overly so, with richer layers of caramel and slightly charred oak presenting mid-palate. A subdued, earthy bitterness arrives late. Throughout the pour is a subtle whiskey heat, complementing the chocolate, caramel, and oak in a near perfect balance. The Brett provides just enough "twang" to make this really special. I'm not sure if Scott Hand has an alter ego, but I think "Wizard of Germantown" might be appropriate, because he certainly seems to produce magic in the brewhouse. Well done, my friend. If you find yourself hungry in Louisville, I would highly recommend a stop at Monnik for incredible beer, delicious food, and a beautiful space.
