Year of New Beer: Thickfreakness, Rubobrau (Louisville)

Rich, nearly charred malts, burnt sugars, and bitter cocoa powder dominate the nose. Lesser but still noticeable notes of dark fruit, toasted bread, and light soy sauce are present as well. On the tongue, this is a bold, roasty Russian Imperial Stout! The chocolate maintains a slightly dry, cocoa powder-like consistency, follow by roasted nuts and a touch of astringent coffee. By mid-palate, an earthy hop bite begins to build, serving to balance a creamy, smooth caramel. Finishes dry with a bitter, woody char. Very deceptive 11% ABV. Excellent. Many professional brewers would be proud to have a beer of this quality as their flagship Russian Imperial Stout. I'm just thankful to have as a friend a homebrewer who is willing to share his considerable talents. Well done Mark, this is one to thump your chest over.
