Year of New Beer: Prodigal, Perennial Artisan Ales (St. Louis)

Outstanding nose of fudge brownie batter and dark, roasted malts. An subtle, early note of vanilla builds slowly with warmth and eventually becomes the star of the olfactory show. On the tongue, this is just so rich and roasty. Bittersweet chocolate serves as the base for auxiliary notes of earthy hops and charred toast. Much as it does in the aroma, vanilla lends a building sweetness that rounds and softens the bitterness. Caramel, dark fruit, and cream add depth to a semi-dry, modestly bitter finish. This is simply outstanding.
